What is BassMatter all about?
Bass Matter is an idea..
an idea that learning to be musical and being an instrumentalist is a lifestyle. Yes, it can be a hobby, a stress reliever and often times a dream. A BIG DREAM!
I grew up in Montrose Colorado. I little town on the Western Slope with the small town culture, a local bakery, one big intersection of Main and Townsend where the light flashed red past 9pm. A great, quite, little town that has grown up a lot in the last 20 years, but still "feels" the same.
I got interested in bass in this little town out of need. The high-school Jazz band was losing it's only bass player and I was an incoming sophomore. (High-School was 10-12, Freshman were at Junior High) and I was approached by Brian, one of the Sax players at the school. He asked me if I knew any bass players, I quickly replied that I was a bass player. It was a lie, I had never held one before my entire life. I don't know why I lied, but, I continued the lie. I went home, told my dad I wanted to play bass and as blessed as I was, my parents were in a position to quickly get me started. This lie, quickly came unraveled as I was called out on my lack of ability. This is of course, another story.
Last century, (wow, it feels strange to say that) when I started learning to play bass, there was no Youtube, Facebook, Gmail was in idea, touch screen toys belonged in the military and learning anything required long trips to the library, ordering books to be shipped in from larger cities. Getting a musical book on scales for bass was difficult to find in the first place and usually, the waiting list was too long to even wait for it to show up. Classically trained musicians are hard to find in rural cow-towns and bass players were like unicorns.
Well, times have changed but the need for learning and resources for many towns across the world remains strong. Even a high-speed internet connection is a dream for some still. That being said, Bass Matter is my vision to provide not only free, but real musical tools applicable towards bass that can be accessed much more easily than learners of yesteryear may have been able to enjoy.
Yes, there are many great online paid resources and even free youtube lessons online that are rock solid. Bass Matter is my contribution to this collective and I hope that regardless the size of town or lack or abundance of unicorns are in your area, Bass Matter is there to provide a structure, a plan and a path for you to follow on your musical bass journey.
BassMatter is supported by donations. If you like using the charts and practice tools provided, please consider making a donation to keep it going. =) Thanks!
